Richmond County Historical Society

The Richmond County Historical Society was founded in the early 1980’s. This organization is a means through which we can identify, enhance, and preserve the historical aspects of life in Richmond County since its formation in 1779.

The Historical Society is managed by officers and six directors elected by the membership solely for the benefit of the citizens of Richmond County and any other persons who share its aims.  It operates without discrimination as to race, sex, creed, or nationality.  Donations or memorials are gratefully accepted.

We are a non-profit corporation chartered by the State of North Carolina to do the following:

  • Study, preserve, notate, and publicize the past of Richmond County in such areas as agriculture, archaeology, architecture, cemetery research, education, genealogy, business and industrial development, religion, rural and urban development, and transportation.
  • Encourage historical, genealogical, and archaeological research and preservation through various media such as publications, photography, oral history, and art.
  • Provide a base of support and maintenance for a museum of the history in Richmond County.
  • Develop and make available to the general public and to civic organizations, schools, and other interest groups, speakers, seminars, slide programs, tours, and other educational programs.

Membership in the Richmond County Historical Society will demonstrate your concern and interest in joining with others to understand and preserve our heritage. In turn, we can then bestow this legacy to succeeding generations, not merely the tangible artifacts, but also tested values to guide them in their lives.

The Historical Society has several projects underway at the present time.  With membership dues, donations, and several fund raisers each year, we have the ability to prevent any further destruction of some of the County’s historical buildings.
